No, this is not a post about a certain Republican millionaire running for office. Instead, it is about a much more important political event with religious overtones. Yes, I am talking about France’s insistence on serving wine at a dinner with Iranian diplomats. Here is the story. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2015/11/10/france-wont-dine-with-iran-unless-wine-is-served/?tid=sm_fb
Iran had two conditions to a dinner with President Hollande. Halal meat must be served and no wine should be poured. Seems like being respectful to the guests by honoring their religion. The Islamic code collides with the French lifestyle. But, what is more “religious” than French wine with a French meal? Two “religions” demand a different approach. The French would not budge. As a compromise, they offered a wine free breakfast. That was too “cheap” for the Iranians and the parties agreed to only have a face to face meeting. However, this major diplomatic event raises a great point.
If the Iranians want to distance themselves from ISIS, what better way that to tell the world that a nice oaky Chardonnay can be the good start to a wonderful evening?
And with all of the stories about the U.S. training in Syria, would serving wine help Iranians believe we were talking about training vines?
I guess I could see Donald Trump extolling the French for not being soft and giving up their wines. And he keeps talking about countries that “eat our lunch”. So, I guess he did make it into this post after all.
