In the ultimate of ironies, the US Magistrate will begin selling authenticated wine from the collection of Rudy Kurniawan, one of the most (temporarily) successful counterfeiters in the history of wine. So, how do you know for sure you will be buying an authentic bottle of wine? Well, the Marshalls hired a team of experts to go over the bottles first and cull out the fakes.
The announcement itself does recognize the irony in this sale. But, still, who will be a bidder? You may get a great deal like the Picasso I bought at an art auction for $150! The auctioneer said it was real.
The world has a history of counterfeiters actually coming up with something that is better than the original. For example, McDonald’s started with the Egg McMuffin. Chick-Fil-A switched the muffin for a biscuit and the egg for chicken and voila! Thus, even if the experts are wrong, you may get a really good bottle of wine.
If you are bidding, let me know. For my part, I will pass, not in the least because that same auctioneer has a Chagall up for auction next week with a starting bid of $50!
Oh, and if you get that Chagall, let me know about that, too.
